What happens to your data

Visiting this site

No cookies. No analytics, no tracking pixels, no third-party scripts. Every file the site loads comes from this domain, and that's enforced by a content security policy rather than just being the intention.

The site is hosted on Cloudflare, which handles the request and keeps short-lived logs (your IP address, the page, the time) for security and to stop abuse. That's Cloudflare's processing as our host, not something this site collects or can read back.

Player avatars on the leaderboard are copied onto this server once a day and served from here, rather than loaded from Steam while you read the page. That's on purpose: linking straight to them would send every visitor's IP address to Valve for the sake of a 32-pixel thumbnail.

The leaderboard

Once a day this site reads the top hundred entries of the Descent leaderboard from Steam and republishes them. For each entry, that's:

• Your Steam ID
• Your Steam display name, as it stands that day
• Your Steam avatar, if you have one
• A link to your Steam profile, but only if your profile is public
• Your score, and the depth and mean level time it decodes to

Nothing else is read and nothing else is stored. No email address, no real name, no friends list, no games owned, no playtime. If your Steam profile is private, the profile link is dropped and the rest of the row still shows.

All of it is data Steam already publishes about a leaderboard entry, and it's here for the obvious reason: a leaderboard with the names taken off is just a list of numbers.

The copy on this site is rebuilt from scratch every day, so a display name you change on Steam changes here within a day, and an entry that leaves the Steam board leaves this one.

Getting off it

Mail support and say which entry. It comes off within a day. You don't have to explain why, and it doesn't affect your score in the game.

The game itself

Your progress and your times are saved on your own machine. Nothing about how you play goes anywhere else, apart from your score, achievements and stats going to Steam. Those are all Steam features and they're covered by Valve's privacy policy.

The Feedback button on the main menu opens a form hosted by Google Forms. It arrives with your build version, operating system, graphics adapter, renderer, screen resolution and locale already filled in. It carries no Steam ID and no display name. That's deliberate, and there's a test in the codebase that fails if it ever stops being true. Everything else on that form is whatever you typed into it.

Children

The game isn't aimed at children, and this site collects nothing from anyone. Steam accounts have their own age requirements, which Valve enforces.

Changes

If what this page describes changes, the page changes with it. There's no version history worth keeping: the whole thing is above, and if anything gets added to what the leaderboard publishes, it gets a line in that list.
